I am a professional qualified Hypnotherapist and Counsellor with therapy rooms based in Torquay and Exeter, Devon. I appreciate how daunting it may seem when you consider sharing your feelings and thoughts with someone you don’t know. Therefore I’d like to tell you a little about myself and the experience I am able to bring to the role of therapist.
Prior to becoming a counsellor I was a successful business owner for more than 10 years, and then the stresses caused me to close my business. At this point I decided to go for counselling. This was a totally new and life-affirming experience for me as it helped me understand the value of life, and that it need not consist solely of work and stress. The counselling had had such a profoundly positive effect on my life that I decided to take an introduction course on counselling concepts. This further helped me grow as an individual and led me to the decision to become a counsellor so that I could help others.
After this, I completed two further counselling courses, followed by attending the Dartmoor Centre at Newton Abbot where I successfully achieved the Advanced Diploma in Humanistic Counselling. The Diploma took two years to complete, during which time I also took a placement as a counsellor in Honiton Community College. The whole experience proved to be a really valuable learning experience, and helped me realise how important the role of counsellor can be in a college environment.
Whilst studying for my Diploma, my friend was diagnosed with Cancer. Sadly he had no other family members to care for him and so I became his main carer. It was a really emotional experience as I watched my good friend slowly slip away. My counselling course was already teaching me how to cope with bereavement and loss. After having personally experienced bereavement and loss I can truly empathise with my clients who are going through this experience.
I had previously been diagnosed with Dyslexia, which had proved really frustrating over the years. The counselling training taught me to how to manage my Dyslexia. Now I am in a position to impart this help to my clients when needed.
During the time that I was struggling with my former business I experienced depression and therefore appreciate just how debilitating that illness can be. It resulted in me having a breakdown, which in turn led me to seek personal counselling. The positive outcome of the counselling sessions led me to change my career where I am now able to help others. I am also happy to say that I no longer suffer from depression. The counselling that I received helped me change my outlook on life by enabling me to have a more positive focus.
Alongside the Counselling courses, I also completed the Diploma in NLP (Neuro Linguistic Programming) and became a certified Hypnotherapist. I was impressed by the way that this therapy promotes change and moving forward with fast results.
After completing the Advanced Diploma in counselling I gained a position as a counsellor at the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital. I now run a private practice that has therapy rooms in Torquay and Exeter. I really enjoy the variety of work and get great job satisfaction witnessing my clients grow during our counselling and hypnotherapy sessions.
Alongside my counselling and hypnotherapy practice I play in a duo, playing live music in Devon pubs. I really enjoy music, both playing and listening as it provides time to relax and time out to enjoy a pint.
